OpenAI's AI Adoption Gap: A Problem at the Heart of its Success
OpenAI's internal adoption of its Codex tool is significantly higher than external users. The company's head of product, Thibault Sottiaux, reported that nearly every employee uses Codex, with a 98% adoption rate. In contrast, only 17% of organizational subscribers and less than 1% of individual subscribers engage with AI agents.
The gap between internal and external adoption is attributed to user experience issues. Sottiaux explained that the current generation of AI agents requires too much configuration, permission settings, and guidance on what they can do. To address this, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a product targeting non-engineers with autonomous, multi-step tasks across tools like email, Slack, and calendars.
Brockman's consolidation play involves merging ChatGPT, Codex, and API initiatives into a single platform framework, creating a unified 'agentic platform.' This long-term vision aims to simplify interfaces and lower the barrier at every step, showing users what's possible before asking them to grant access. OpenAI employees' high adoption rate supports this approach, as they understand the tools due to immersion in the culture and colleague guidance.
