Optimism Tightens Verification Layer with Kona v1.8.0 Update
Optimism has released an important maintenance update for its Kona verification layer. The latest version, v1.8.0, addresses several technical issues that could have led to inconsistencies in the derivation and proof execution of blockchain data.
The update focuses on ensuring that two pieces of verification software derive the same answers from the same chain data. Specifically, it tightens up the handling of malformed batches and improves how Kona handles errors during proof execution.
Malformed batches are now treated more strictly, with Kona checking their parent hash against the safe head in the same way as op-node. This prevents a faulty batcher from producing a malformed batch that could lead to different chains being derived by Kona and op-node.
The update also changes how proof execution handles errors. Instead of treating them as proof that the payload is invalid, errors such as missing preimage or witness data will now stop execution.
