Optimism Unlocks Path to Superchain Interoperability

Optimism has approved Upgrade 20, a crucial step towards enabling Superchain interoperability. The update moves four OP Stack testnets to Super Root dispute games, which will eventually allow multiple chains to share the same timestamp.

The change updates the fault-proof system that secures withdrawals and prepares the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem for future Superchain interoperability. Mainnet activation is still dependent on a healthy seven-day testnet soak, with September 24 as the target date rather than a certainty.

Upgrade 20 moves fault proofs from Output Root Dispute Games to Super Root Dispute Games, altering how OP Stack chains challenge incorrect state before withdrawals are finalized back to Ethereum. This transition aims to avoid modifying the security layer again when cross-chain interoperability is activated.
