Optimism's Year 5 Outlook Raises Red Flags Over Governance Token Supply

Optimism's Year 5 outlook has raised five red flags for holders of its governance token, OP. The report outlines plans to release around 343 million new tokens over the next 12 months, but its buyback program has only managed to purchase 9 million so far.

The discrepancy between projected and actual supply raises concerns about the foundation's transparency and tokenomics. The report itself describes the numbers as 'directional estimates,' which could be seen as vague or misleading.

Furthermore, the circulating supply of OP is estimated to reach 2.16 billion, but the foundation's official tracker shows a higher number, 2.29 billion, leaving 125 million unaccounted for.

The buyback program has been routing up to half of Superchain revenue into monthly OP purchases, but it has only managed to cover one token bought for every 38 released. This raises questions about the viability and effectiveness of the program in addressing the increasing supply.
