Payward Unveils Ambitious Plan to Become Unified Financial Infrastructure
Payward, the company behind Kraken, is transforming itself into a unified financial infrastructure provider. The firm has made significant strides in this direction through a series of billion-dollar acquisitions and partnerships with traditional finance institutions.
The acquisition blitz includes purchases such as NinjaTrader for $1.5B, Reap Technologies for up to $600M, and Bitnomial for up to $550M. These deals have given Payward serious derivatives infrastructure, regulated crypto derivatives capabilities, and cross-border stablecoin payment rails.
The company has also received significant investments from traditional finance giants such as Deutsche Börse ($200M in April 2026) and Nasdaq Ventures ($100M in September 2026). These partnerships are aimed at integrating Payward's platform with existing financial systems, enabling features like tokenized equities and 24/7 settlement.
The xStocks experiment, a tokenized equities platform, has already processed over $25B in cumulative transaction volume by mid-2026. However, regulatory frameworks for tokenized securities remain patchwork across jurisdictions, raising governance questions and integration risk concerns.
