Petrobras Deploys Blockchain Tech for SAF and Renewable Diesel Tracking

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil group, is expanding its use of blockchain technology in fuel traceability through two Cardano-based applications tied to sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The initiative links environmental claims to digital records, improving emissions reporting and preventing double counting.

The new system uses Book-and-Claim tokens with CORSIA-aligned metadata, enabling airlines and passengers to claim emissions credits even if the fuel is consumed elsewhere. Petrobras has developed these applications in collaboration with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs as part of an ongoing research and development project that began in 2023.

The Cardano-based solution supports Scope 3 emissions reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company's value chain. The exact fuel volumes covered by the applications or the timeline for broader deployment are not disclosed by Petrobras.
