Petrobras Tests Cardano Blockchain for Cleaner Jet Fuel and Diesel R
Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company, is testing the Cardano blockchain in two research projects to track cleaner jet fuel and Diesel R. The Cardano Foundation describes this as an early step for on-chain provenance and traceability.
The aviation project targets sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and uses a book-and-claim model to prevent emissions reduction from being counted twice. This model separates fuel use from the allocation of environmental benefits, allowing airlines to receive benefits even if the fuel itself is used elsewhere.
The SAF workflow records the benefit's origin and recipient, enabling participants to trace claims back to the fuel certificate behind them. A certificate-checking process occurs before digital records enter the system, including checks against the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
Petrobras is also testing Cardano blockchain in a project targeting Diesel R, which is diesel made partly from renewable materials such as vegetable oils or animal fats. The project would create digital checkpoints that collect information at successive stages of production, transportation, and use.
