Petrobras, a Brazilian state-controlled energy company, is testing Cardano blockchain technology in two lower-carbon fuel projects. The initiatives focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Diesel R, with the goal of improving fuel traceability and environmental data verification.

The projects involve a collaboration between Petrobras, the Cardano Foundation, and Ledger Labs, a blockchain center based at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. The partnership aims to address challenges around making environmental claims and fuel lifecycle information easier to trace and verify.

The SAF project uses a Book-and-Claim model, which connects physical fuel certificates with digital records of their associated environmental attributes. This allows SAF attributes to be tokenized, transferred, and retired on the blockchain, creating an auditable record for sustainability claims.
