Pleterski's Self-Representation Approved in 'Crypto King' Fraud Trial

Canadian cryptocurrency investor Aiden Pleterski, known as the 'Crypto King,' has been allowed to represent himself in an upcoming trial for criminal fraud and money laundering. This decision was made by Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru after he denied a request from Pleterski's lawyers to delay the trial.

Pleterski's scheme, which promised investors high returns on their cryptocurrency investments, has left over $40 million in losses for roughly 160 investors. Only $3 million has been recovered since Pleterski was forced into bankruptcy in 2022.

Nakatsuru denied the adjournment request after hearing arguments from both sides, with Crown attorney Scott Patterson stating that Pleterski had not been 'honest and genuine' in his attempts to obtain counsel. Despite this, Nakatsuru has agreed to make objections on Pleterski's behalf to ensure only admissible evidence reaches the jury.

Pleterski will face trial in early October for fraud under the Criminal Code of Canada with judge-assisted objections. This development comes after a local report revealed that Pleterski had asked for the delay to give himself more time to secure legal counsel, but was denied due to concerns about his honesty and ability to represent himself effectively.
