Polygon Burns 100 Million POL Tokens, Reduces Economic Supply
Polygon's economic supply has been permanently reduced by 100 million POL tokens, representing roughly 1% of its total supply. The transfer occurred on September 23 and was announced by Sandeep Nailwal, CEO of Polygon Foundation. According to Nailwal, 'BURN COMPLETE: 100 MILLION POL (~1% of POL total supply) IS OFFICIALLY BURNED PERMANENTLY.'
The tokens were transferred from Polygon's fee-collection system and will not be returned to circulation. This action is in line with the network's plans to reduce its economic supply through burning. Under PIP-82, fees tied to eligible agentic-commerce activity can enter a temporary rebate program capped at $1 million, while POL that is not recycled continues toward the burn collector.
The transfer may have left the contract's reported supply figure unchanged, but it has permanently reduced the economic supply of Polygon. This move does not guarantee a higher price for POL, as continued demand would be needed to sustain a price above the $0.11-$0.115 range.
