Polygon's $10M Burn Falls Flat as Market Yawns
Polygon's POL token burn contract was deployed on September 23, and three hours later, it successfully burned 100 million tokens, worth around $10 million at the time. The burned tokens were accumulated in the network base fee collection contract as fees.
The burn is seen as a deflationary move by Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal, who had previously announced that the collection address held about 121 million POL, with the remainder staying in the collection side to be triggered by the community on a quarterly basis going forward.
However, the market reaction was muted, with the price of POL remaining around $0.1. The burn is framed as 'periodic fee recovery,' not a change to the issuance system, which has an annual effective issuance rate of about 2% since June 2025.
