Pons vs Pump.fun: A Tale of Two Crypto Launchpads

The crypto launchpad market is dominated by two platforms: Pons and Pump.fun. These platforms allow users to create and launch new tokens without needing to code a smart contract or set up liquidity manually.

Pons uses the Robinhood Chain, while Pump.fun runs on Solana. Both platforms use bonding curves to price tokens before they reach a real liquidity pool. However, their similarities end there.

Pons has two live models: v1 and v2. In v1, tokens launch straight into a Uniswap pool paired against WETH with wallet caps in the first two blocks to slow down snipers. In v2, tokens start on a bonding curve and only get a pool once that curve sells out, creating a Uniswap v4 pool with liquidity locked permanently.

Pump.fun's approach is different. Tokens launch on a bonding curve and graduate to Raydium, Solana's on-chain automated market maker, where they trade in a more conventional liquidity pool. However, migrating a coin to Raydium costs roughly 1.5-2 SOL in protocol and LP fees.

The choice between Pons and Pump.fun depends on the user's ecosystem and preferences. If Solana's massive existing memecoin trading volume and Raydium's established liquidity matter most, Pump.fun might be a better option. However, if users want permanently locked liquidity with no separate migration fee for the creator to come up with, Pons' structure is built specifically around that guarantee.
