Porsche Abandons Web3 Initiative, Leaving NFT Holders in Limbo
Porsche announced it is shutting down its Web3 initiative and the PIONEERS CIRCLE community, which was launched almost four years ago. The program aimed to bring the Porsche spirit into the digital world and build an engaged community. The company will not burn or revoke the PORSCHE 911 NFTs, but current holders will no longer have access to exclusive community events and channels. The PIONEERS CIRCLE Discord will become a read-only archive, and the project's X account will stop posting updates.
The PORSCHE 911 collection was unveiled at Art Basel Miami in December 2022, with a planned release of 7,500 NFTs priced at 0.911 ETH each. Demand was weaker than expected, and the supply was cut to 2,363 tokens after hearing from collectors. The community became more exclusive as a result, but trading had already slowed sharply before the shutdown was announced.
The shutdown of the Web3 project is similar to what Nike did with its RTFKT digital collectibles in December 2024. Both companies entered NFTs during the 2021 to 2022 boom and later pulled back, letting the tokens continue to exist on the blockchain. Porsche's exit points to an ongoing problem in Web3: NFTs only hold their value as long as engagement continues.
