Privacy Coin Boom Surges $24 Billion in Five Months
The privacy coin sector has seen significant growth over the past five months, adding $24.54 billion in value. Zcash (ZEC) and monero (XMR) have led the advance, accounting for nearly all of the sector's growth. The total market cap of the sector is now worth $36.51 billion, up from $11.97 billion on April 9, 2026.
ZEC's market cap has swelled by a whopping $20.27 billion over the past five months, while XMR's total valuation has jumped by $4.33 billion. The prices of ZEC and XMR have also increased dramatically, trading at $1,507 and $555 respectively, up from $319 and $330 on April 9.
The growth in privacy coins can be attributed to increased blockchain surveillance. Governments and companies are intensifying blockchain monitoring after a surge in illicit crypto transfers in 2025, making privacy coins like XMR and ZEC attractive for those who value financial privacy and individual freedom.
Wall Street and regulators have also played a role in the growth of ZEC. The SEC closed its investigation into the Zcash Foundation without recommending enforcement action, clearing the way for Grayscale's ZCSH spot ETF to be listed on NYSE Arca on August 25. This has led to substantial capital flowing through this channel.
