Public Companies Hold Record Amount of Bitcoin Amid Regulatory Clarity
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, remains the largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, holding approximately 847,000 BTC acquired at a total cost of roughly $64 billion. This positions it above BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust with roughly 806,700 BTC.
The adoption of FASB's ASU 2023-08, which requires fair value accounting for crypto assets, has removed a key barrier that previously discouraged corporations from holding Bitcoin. This change allows companies to measure their crypto holdings at fair value each reporting period, replacing the old impairment-only model that penalized holders unfairly.
Public companies collectively held approximately 1.16 million BTC as of April 2026, representing over 5 percent of Bitcoin's total circulating supply. Strategy measures its performance using a proprietary metric called Bitcoin Yield, which tracks the percentage change in Bitcoin holdings relative to diluted shares outstanding.
