Retail Liquidity Shifts Towards Crypto Markets Weakening KOSPI Support
South Korea's retail investors are increasingly redirecting their liquidity towards crypto markets, which is weakening domestic buying support for further gains in the KOSPI. The shift has made any continued advance dependent on foreign investors and local institutions reallocating capital.
The conditions for a short-term tactical breakout of the KOSPI exist, but weaker retail participation could limit its domestic support. Rate concerns that have been partly absorbed, renewed risk appetite for 'proxy AI' themes, and expectations that fourth-quarter DRAM contract prices will rise by double digits quarter over quarter are also contributing to market conditions.
Factors supporting the market include HBM4 production ramp-up, Samsung Electronics' substantial shareholder returns, continuous institutional buying, and foreign investors turning net buyers. October will be a key test of whether foreign investors continue adding exposure to South Korean semiconductor and AI assets.
