Ripple Bolsters XRP Ledger with Expanded Payments and Credit Capabilities
Ripple, a leading provider of global payment solutions, is intensifying its focus on the XRP Ledger, a decentralized ledger technology that underpins its payment infrastructure. According to Monica Long, Ripple's SVP of Product and Engineering, the XRP Ledger is at the heart of the company's universe, and the company is building its 2027 annual plan around a top goal of driving customer transaction volume directly onto the ledger.
Long highlighted the growth of Ripple's full-stack payments infrastructure, which has seen a 10x year-on-year increase in adoption and volumes. This infrastructure is centered around the XRP Ledger, and Long sees an opportunity to bring this volume onto the ledger through the use of RLUSD, a stablecoin that is native to the XRP Ledger.
Ripple is also working on a pilot project that tests the use of a decentralized exchange for payments on the XRP Ledger. The pilot has shown real benefits, and Long expects this to grow significantly in 2027, moving beyond the pilot stage.
Vet, a top XRPL validator, noted that payments and credit together represent a major unlock, specifically through the XLS-66 Lending Protocol. This protocol allows for short-term credit to be accessed by payment service businesses, which can then be used to facilitate 24/7 funding across time zones.
Ripple is building a solution that ties directly into the XRP Ledger's lending protocol, allowing pools of XRP to be loaned into the protocol and used as collateral to fund payments for Ripple's customers.
