Robinhood Sets Sights on US Tokenized Stock Trading
Robinhood is planning to launch tokenized stock trading in the US by 2027. This move comes after the company received a conditional exemption from the SEC, allowing it to facilitate trading of tokenized National Market System stocks on blockchain platforms.
The exemption, granted on September 17, has opened a door for Robinhood to bring its tokenized stock trading product to the US market, which was previously excluded due to regulatory issues. The company's tokenized equity push started modestly in June 2025 with the launch of Classic Stock Tokens for users in the EU and European Economic Area.
The tokens are structured as tokenized debt securities, issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited. Holders do not get direct ownership of the underlying shares, and they do not have voting rights. However, the SEC's exemption requires platforms to preserve shareholder rights and obtain issuer consent, which would push Robinhood's current model toward something closer to actual equity ownership.
Ronin CEO Vlad Tenev has been advocating for regulatory clarity on tokenized stocks, citing benefits such as real-time settlement and reduced dependence on legacy market infrastructure. With the SEC exemption in place, Robinhood appears ready to walk through the door and offer its tokenized stock trading product to US users.
