Robinhood Unveils Voting Rights and Direct Redemptions for Stock Token Holders
Robinhood's Stock Token offerings are about to get some significant upgrades. CEO Vlad Tenev announced on X that the platform will introduce voting rights and direct one-to-one share redemptions for holders of its tokenized stock products.
The move comes after public pressure from AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron, who demanded Robinhood cease offering AMC-linked tokens due to concerns over ownership structure. Currently, Stock Token holders do not have actual shares or beneficial ownership rights, but rather receive price movement exposure linked to the reference stock.
This classification as debt securities rather than equity instruments has raised eyebrows in the industry, with some questioning whether the 'stock token' label accurately represents these financial products. Coinbase is also implementing similar voting features, having already enabled direct redemptions and dividend distributions for its tokenized equity products.
