Robinhood's Weekend Trading Gambit Threatens to Strip Away Bitcoin's Edge
Riding the wave of innovation, Robinhood is poised to shake up the traditional stock trading landscape by introducing weekend trading sessions, courtesy of its partnership with Bruce ATS. This move, expected to launch soon pending regulatory approval, could potentially strip away one of Bitcoin's most distinctive selling points: its ability to trade 24/7. The new plan will extend trading hours to include Saturdays and Sundays, allowing investors to trade stocks and ETFs outside of the traditional Monday-to-Friday schedule.
The integration of weekend stock trading is part of Robinhood's broader efforts to enhance its trading platform. The company will also introduce AI trading agents and crypto perpetual futures, which will be available for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and other cryptocurrencies. These contracts will allow for up to 10x leverage on Bitcoin and Ethereum, and up to 3x on the others.
While weekend trading may seem appealing, it often comes with challenges. With fewer buyers and sellers during weekends, spreads can widen, making weekend traders pay more than they would on a busier weekday. Bitcoin shares this challenge, as professional trading slows down during weekends, causing significant price swings.
Interestingly, Bitcoin's weekend edge has never been a guarantee of its price stability. Despite its 24/7 trading availability, Bitcoin has experienced significant price fluctuations. As of October 2, Bitcoin was priced at $85,975, still down about 3% in 2026 and 29% over the past year.
