RUSI Taskforce Tackles Crypto's Illicit Uses

Share

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has launched a Crypto and International Security Taskforce to study how cryptoassets are reshaping global security. The taskforce, funded by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, aims to bring together senior government officials, law enforcement and regulatory authorities, researchers, and private sector experts to address the growing concerns around crypto's use in illicit activities.

RUSI estimates that sanctioned entities received $104 billion in crypto during 2025, a 694% year-on-year increase. Organised crime groups are also using crypto to move billions of dollars in illicit proceeds and exploit regulatory gaps.

The taskforce will examine three key areas: mapping how illicit actors use crypto for organised crime, terrorist financing, sanctions evasion and political interference; assessing the regulatory, law enforcement and industry tools available to counter that use; and examining legitimate applications such as civil society and humanitarian aid.
