Russia Introduces Digital Ruble and Tightens Crypto Regulations
The Russian government is implementing several changes to its financial system on September 1, 2026. One of the key changes is the introduction of a digital ruble, which will be used as a third form of the national currency alongside cash and non-cash money.
The digital ruble will be stored in a digital wallet on the Bank of Russia's platform, and users can top up their wallets with up to 300,000 rubles per month without a fee. Transfers between bank accounts and digital wallets within the established monthly limit will also be free.
Cryptocurrency has been given a clearer legal status in Russia, but its use remains limited. It cannot be accepted as payment for goods or services, except under certain conditions in foreign trade contracts. Private investors will face restrictions on which cryptocurrencies they can invest in and the amount they can invest annually.
