S&P Global Grabs Gatekeeper Role with OpenZeppelin Acquisition
S&P Global has made its first move into on-chain security ratings by acquiring smart contract auditor OpenZeppelin for an undisclosed sum. This deal marks a significant shift in the gatekeeping power of S&P, which has traditionally been limited to bond ratings.
The acquisition extends S&P's influence from financial soundness to on-chain code security, with OpenZeppelin staying independently branded under S&P Global Ratings. Co-founder Demian Brener will continue to lead the team, reporting directly to ratings chief Yann Le Pallec.
OpenZeppelin has an impressive track record, having audited over 900 contracts since 2015 and caught more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before they went live. Its open-source contract libraries remain free and publicly maintained on GitHub.
The acquisition is a strategic move by S&P to expand its reach into the crypto infrastructure, building on its recent integration of Kaiko's data into a 4,000-strong index suite. With this deal, S&P gains credibility to attach ratings to code security, which could become a new benchmark for issuers in the market.
