San Diego Targets Cryptocurrency Scams with Warning Signs
San Diego is poised to become the first city in California to crack down on cryptocurrency scams targeting seniors. The proposed law would require warning signs at all 110 cryptocurrency ATMs operating in the city, following a similar move by Omaha in Nebraska which saw an 80% reduction in such scams.
The City Council's rules committee unanimously endorsed the measure, citing $389 million stolen nationwide through crypto ATM scams last year. Advocates say the stakes are high for low-income seniors on fixed incomes, where even a single financial loss can be devastating.
Scammers typically target seniors due to their limited digital savvy and isolation. Many don't report such crimes due to shame. The proposed law would also include warnings that crypto transactions are not FDIC-insured like traditional bank transactions.
