SAND Price Surges Amid Suspected Mint Attack and Security Breach

A potential security breach has rocked The Sandbox's SAND token, causing its price to surge by over 19% in the last week. South Korean exchange Upbit warned traders about issues with SAND's security and possible fluctuations in prices on August 22, 2026.

The incident involved the minting of more than 500 million new SAND tokens, equivalent to at least 16.7% of the token's maximum supply of 3 billion. This has raised concerns about dilution for existing token holders, especially if the newly minted tokens went to exchanges without market demand.

On-chain sleuths have identified a possible loophole in the Base SAND contract that could allow hackers to mint tokens at any time. Lookonchain referred to this as an 'infinite mint attack.'
