Saylor Argues Bitcoin is Infrastructure for Preserving Capital

Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), has reignited the debate on Bitcoin's true nature in his essay 'What Is Money?' published on August 15. He argues that Bitcoin transcends its status as a speculative asset and is instead an infrastructure designed to preserve and transfer capital.

Saylor contrasts Bitcoin with other assets, such as gold and fiat currencies, which he claims are susceptible to erosion over time. He highlights the use of electricity and computing power in the Proof of Work consensus mechanism as anchoring digital scarcity in physical reality and securing the network without banking intermediaries.

Strategy's balance sheet, which holds 840,447 BTC worth approximately $63.36 billion at an average purchase price of $75,385 per unit, demonstrates this vision in practice. The company has abandoned passive holding to make strategic arbitrages and finance the buyback of its own shares, using net proceeds from Bitcoin sales.

Saylor emphasizes the importance of preserving the integrity of the network by rejecting any modifications to consensus rules, which could weaken programmed scarcity, settlement rules, and the incentive structure for investors. He sees three key pillars underpinning this monetary engineering: immutability through energy expenditure, sovereignty through cryptography, and strict preservation of network rules.
