Scam Victims' Cryptocurrency Recovered in Oconee County Investigation
Elderly residents of Oconee County in Georgia were targeted by scammers who posed as Federal Trade Commission agents, tricking them into withdrawing money and depositing it into cryptocurrency kiosks.
The victims received pop-up messages on their computers claiming that their bank accounts had been breached. They then contacted people they believed were FTC agents, only to be communicating with scammers who instructed them to withdraw their money and transfer it to the kiosks.
A joint investigation by state and local authorities, including the Georgia Attorney General's Office and the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, was able to trace the stolen cryptocurrency. The funds were recovered and returned to the victims, with the Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr saying that his office's White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit worked closely with the other agencies on the case.
