Seagate Stock Dips as Toshiba Bidding War Unfolds
Seagate Technology (STX) shares dropped around 2% in premarket trading on Tuesday after Bloomberg reported that the company is locked in a bidding war with Toshiba to acquire TDK Corp’s magnetic-heads business. The deal, potentially worth several billion dollars, is crucial for the hard-disk drive (HDD) industry, as magnetic heads are essential components for reading and writing data on HDDs. TDK is currently the sole independent supplier of these heads to Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital (WDC).
Toshiba later denied the Bloomberg report, adding confusion to the situation. The uncertainty comes at a challenging time for Seagate, as its stock had already fallen last week on news that Toshiba plans to double its AI data-center drive capacity by fiscal 2027. Despite some recovery on Monday, Seagate’s stock has not fully rebounded, and Tuesday’s headlines are not helping.
Investors have been cautious, particularly after Seagate’s CEO sold shares earlier this month under a pre-arranged trading plan. While such plans are typically set up in advance, the timing has raised eyebrows. The broader market showed gains on Tuesday, with the S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq all rising, indicating that Seagate’s decline is company-specific.
The outcome of the TDK bidding situation remains unresolved. Whoever acquires TDK’s magnetic-heads unit will gain significant leverage over the HDD supply chain. Seagate’s next earnings report is expected around October 28, and the stock is trading well below its 52-week high of $1,145, hit before last week’s sharp pullback.
