SEC Drops Crypto Cases to Preserve Credibility
SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda revealed that the agency dropped several crypto-related lawsuits to protect its credibility. The decision came as part of a '180-degree shift' in how the SEC handles crypto legal questions, according to Uyeda.
The commissioner argued that continuing to defend legal positions expected to be abandoned could weaken confidence in the agency if its interpretation later changes. This change marks a significant move towards rulemaking and temporary regulatory relief for parts of the crypto market.
Uyeda described the SEC's Innovation Exemption as 'a kind of pilot' that will allow certain onchain venues to trade tokenized U.S. stocks under specific conditions. The exemption is intended to observe how these markets operate while considering longer-term rules, with the commission requesting public feedback on the framework.
