SEC Exemption Opens Door to Compliant Trading with Uniswap
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has granted a temporary exemption to platforms called 'Tokenized Securities Platforms,' which allow certain tokenized US stocks to be traded on-chain. SEC member Hester Peirce's approach to decentralized systems in her assessment of the decision drew attention from Uniswap founder Hayden Adams.
Adams highlighted that according to Peirce, truly decentralized systems operated by autonomous software do not expose the underlying intermediary risks of securities regulation. This view could be interpreted as meaning that normal, permissionless Uniswap use does not require an additional exemption, which is significant for licensed pools on Uniswap v4.
The development has created a pathway for compliant trading in the US for assets and users subject to regulatory requirements, potentially leading to the adoption of Automated Market Maker (AMM) technologies in traditional financial markets. The Uniswap team plans to submit a letter of opinion to the SEC containing suggestions for regulatory improvements.
