SEC Greenlights Options Trading for WisdomTree Bitcoin Fund
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved a rule amendment allowing listed options on the WisdomTree Bitcoin Fund, also known as BTCW. This approval is significant because it opens up another regulated derivatives route for institutional traders to access Bitcoin exposure.
According to the SEC, the approval only applies to options tied to the existing WisdomTree Bitcoin Fund and not to a new spot Bitcoin ETF. This distinction is important because it means that investors can now hedge their bets and manage risk more effectively using listed options on BTCW.
The addition of listed options to BTCW is expected to make the product more attractive to institutional traders, who often require derivatives to manage risk. Options allow for hedging, yield strategies, volatility positioning, and more precise risk management without directly trading spot Bitcoin markets.
