SEC Launches Accounting Fraud Unit Amid Shifting Crypto Oversight
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has established a new department to investigate accounting fraud and financial reporting violations, indicating its growing focus on corporate disclosures.
The Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit will operate within the SEC's Division of Enforcement, examining cases involving accounting malpractice, misrepresentations in financial statements, and misconduct by accountants and auditors.
The unit will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the SEC from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher after 12 years at the law firm. He is accompanied by David Woodcock, Enforcement Director, also a former Gibson Dunn alum.
The SEC aims to rebuild its expertise in accounting-related enforcement, which dropped 68% in 2025 compared to the previous year. The new unit combines existing teams and brings in new personnel to tackle the complexities of financial reporting.
