SEC Temporarily Eases Path for Tokenized Stock Trading Amid Crypto Regulatory Uncertainty
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has rolled out a temporary exemption of existing securities laws that facilitates trading of tokenized stocks. This move comes after Congress' failure to advance the Clarity Act for crypto regulation.
The five-year conditional exemption allows trading venues where tokenized securities trade to operate without fear of punishment, as long as they abide by certain conditions. For example, before a trading venue can allow a tokenized stock to trade, it must give the issuing company 30 days notice and the 'ability to object'.
This development has been seen as a positive signal for the cryptocurrency industry, which was disappointed when the Clarity Act failed to garner enough votes to pass through Senate's cloture vote. The bill's failure left many wondering about the future of crypto regulation.
The SEC's move has already had an impact on the market, with Bitcoin seeing a small boost following the announcement. Crypto-linked stocks including Coinbase (COIN), Robinhood (HOOD), and Circle (CRCL) were up at least 3% in recent trading.
