Selig Forecasts Decade of Financial Market Revolution
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig predicts significant changes in financial markets over the next decade due to advancements in blockchain infrastructure, stablecoins, and continuous trading.
In a keynote speech at the U.S. Treasury Market Conference hosted by the New York Fed on September 22, 2026, Selig stated that the coming ten years will likely bring more change than the previous several decades combined.
The CFTC Chairman pointed to the growth of derivatives tied to the Treasury market over twenty years as an example, citing metrics such as a daily turnover in Treasury futures from $200 billion to $900 billion and short-term rate open interest increasing from $10 trillion to over $60 trillion.
Selig emphasized that the CFTC will not take a blanket approach to 24/7 trading and instead plans to evaluate each asset class individually, with crypto and precious metals potentially being suitable for continuous trading while others like agricultural products and energy may require more time.
