Senate Blocks Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Concerns
A Senate bill aimed at regulating cryptocurrency was blocked by Democrats due to concerns over President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
The $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market has been pushing for a uniform set of rules, but the legislation faced opposition from some Democrats who wanted stronger ethics safeguards to prevent the president and his family from profiting while in office.
Senate Democrats blocked the bill with a 49-50 vote, which was short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. The White House has indicated that it will now turn to agencies to implement parts of their crypto agenda.
Trump's family has amassed significant wealth in cryptocurrency, including over $500 million from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products, according to Trump's annual disclosure report filed with the Office of Government Ethics.
