Senate CLARITY Act Faces New Threats Over Trump's Crypto Holdings
A new analysis by the Senate Banking Committee minority staff has renewed Democratic objections to the CLARITY Act, citing concerns that it would allow President Donald Trump to continue profiting from crypto ventures. The report focuses on Trump's reported $1.4 billion in 2025 crypto earnings, which includes approximately $799 million from World Liberty Financial and $635 million from the TRUMP memecoin.
The analysis examines individual revenue streams, including cryptocurrency investments, staking income, and other ventures, concluding that each would remain permissible under the current ethics language. This criticism is similar to previous objections raised by Democrats, who had identified five alleged loopholes in the bill's provisions.
The Senate Banking Committee minority staff argues that qualified blind trusts would preserve the financial value of directly held interests while separating formal management responsibilities. However, supporters maintain that federal enforcement follows existing ethics-law structures and argue that additional mechanisms for addressing presidential crypto conflicts are not necessary.
