Senate Rejects Clarity Act, Deals Blow to Crypto Industry and Trump's Interests
The Senate has dealt a significant blow to the cryptocurrency industry and Donald Trump's personal business interests by rejecting the Clarity Act in a 50-49 vote. The bill required 60 yes-votes to move forward, but four Republican senators broke ranks with their party to join Democrats in voting against it.
The Clarity Act was championed by President Trump, who has personally earned $1.4 billion from his investments in cryptocurrency, according to previous reports. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the bill for not doing enough to prevent politicians from trading crypto and engaging in insider trading, saying 'This crypto bill says, 'Have at it, Mr. President.' … That's just fundamentally wrong.'
The rejection of the Clarity Act sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin dropping over 5% and Coinbase shares plummeting almost 10%. Democrats had opposed the bill due to concerns that it would allow politicians like Trump to profit from crypto investments without adequate safeguards.
