Senate Rejects Clarity Act, Delaying Comprehensive Crypto Regulation in US
The Senate's defeat of the Clarity Act on Tuesday has put the brakes on efforts to create a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in the US.
The bill, which aimed to clarify responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), received 49 votes in favor and 50 against. Although the strong opposition from industry players was expected, the outcome reduces the chances of a Senate approval this year.
The proposal sought to establish clear guidelines for digital asset issuance and trading, but it faced intense debate over issues such as ethics rules for public officials, anti-money laundering and terrorism financing concerns, and stablecoin regulation.
