Shielded Bitcoin: Private Transactions Without Altering the Protocol
Researchers led by Misha Komorov have proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a potential solution for private Bitcoin transactions without altering the underlying protocol. This innovation leverages zero-knowledge proofs and Bitcoin PIPEs to conceal sender, receiver, and transaction amount information.
The approach is research-stage, with unresolved issues such as the small privacy-set problem still needing to be addressed. However, if developed successfully, Shielded Bitcoin could enhance crypto privacy, security, and adoption among corporate treasuries and other privacy-conscious users.
Komorov explains that Bitcoin PIPEs make it possible to achieve this level of privacy without requiring a soft fork or custodians. The proposal still faces challenges, including the potential for indexers and ZK rollups to require trust.
