ShinyHunters Suspect Arrested Amid Ongoing Hacking Spree
A 24-year-old convicted cybercriminal was arrested in the Netherlands on September 16 for allegedly helping crypto hacking collective ShinyHunters. Pepijn van der Stap, also known as 'Umbreon,' had previously been convicted of multiple acts of data theft and extortion.
Van der Stap worked at a cybersecurity startup while carrying out his crimes and was later released from prison in December 2025 after serving a four-year suspended sentence. He claimed to be reformed, but authorities are investigating possible links between him and ShinyHunters.
The group, which has been linked to several high-profile hacks including the FBI's job page, merged with other hacking groups Scattered Spider and LAPSUS$ to become ScatteredLapsussHunters. Sources close to the investigation say that the leader of ShinyHunters, a teenager based in Jordan, had an 'ongoing beef' with van der Stap.
