Six Decade-Old Bitcoin Wallets Stir After Years of Inactivity
Six Bitcoin wallets that had been inactive for over a decade have suddenly sprang to life, moving a combined total of 553.59 BTC worth approximately $40 million between August 16 and August 26.
The oldest wallet in the group hadn't recorded a single transaction since June 2011 and had been bought for pennies on the dollar, now translating into gains that ran into the hundreds of thousands of percent.
This movement may seem unusual, but it's part of a broader trend. Despite the recent activity, the amount of dormant Bitcoin moving onchain has actually fallen to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022.
The exact motivations behind this movement are uncertain, with possibilities ranging from selling or repositioning coins to responding to legal notices or shifting funds due to security concerns.
