Solana Activates Agave Upgrade, Cuts Storage Rent 90%, Boosts Transactions
Solana has activated its Agave 4.2 upgrade on mainnet, starting August 17th. This update brings three key improvements: a 90% reduction in on-chain storage rent, a 3.3-fold increase in maximum transaction size, and a staged reduction of slot time from 400ms to 200ms.
These changes aim to lower developer costs, enable more complex transactions, and speed up transaction confirmations. As a result, Solana is positioning itself competitively against Ethereum.
The upgrade also sets the stage for the upcoming Alpenglow consensus mechanism in October 2026, which will further reduce finality times.
However, some concerns have been raised about increased validator hardware demands and potential network centralization risks as a result of these improvements.
