Solana Cuts Block Times by Nearly 17% with Latest Speed Upgrade

Solana's network has undergone its third speed upgrade since August, with block times dropping by nearly 17%.

The target slot time, which is the window a validator gets to produce a block, decreased from 300 milliseconds to 250 on Friday.

This change allows blocks to arrive faster, but it doesn't increase the number of transactions that can be processed. Each shorter slot now carries proportionally less computation.

The next and final stage under SIMD-0525 targets 200-millisecond slots, with five confirmed per second and epochs near 24 hours.
