Solana Cuts Slot Time to 250ms, Steps Closer to 200ms Goal
Solana has made significant strides in its quest for faster block production, reducing its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This change brings the network closer to its goal of 200ms slots and increases the rate at which the network produces blocks by nearly 17% without raising its overall processing ceiling.
The reduction in target slot time means that each validator's four-slot leader window has fallen from 1.2 seconds to one second, allowing for more frequent updates on the state of the network. This is particularly important for applications such as oracle-based markets and automated market makers, whose operations can depend on the age of onchain data.
Despite the faster clock, overall processing capacity remains roughly unchanged because computation and data limits fall in proportion to the slot duration. The 250ms configuration corresponds to a 37.5 million compute unit limit, while the planned 200ms stage would lower it to 30 million.
