Solana Mainnet Slashes Slot Time to 350ms in Epoch 1020

Solana's Mainnet is set to reduce its slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350ms, effective at epoch 1020. This change will bring the network in line with Testnet and Devnet, which already operate at 200ms and 300ms respectively. The per-block compute ceiling will also be reduced alongside this change.

According to Solana's changelog, the reduction in slot time is designed to increase scheduling opportunities without increasing the load on validators. However, some critics argue that the network may struggle to preserve its coordination margins as the window for leader handoffs narrows.

The draft proposal, known as SIMD-0525, also outlines changes to other budgets, including account writes, votes, data allocation, and more. These reductions are intended to prevent validators from silently doubling their workload each second.
