Solana Network Speeds Up by 17% as Target Slot Time Dropped to 250ms
Solana's network has become significantly faster after its target slot time was reduced from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds on September 18. This change brings the network to four targeted slots per second, up from around 3.3. The upgrade is part of a proposal called SIMD-0525, which aims to gradually reduce Solana's slot time from 400ms to 200ms.
A faster slot time means that wallets, exchanges, and others will get more frequent updates on the state of the blockchain. Transactions won't sit waiting so long before they're picked up and processed. Validators act as the network's coordinator for four slots at a time, but because each individual slot is now shorter, their control window has shrunk from 1.2s to 1s.
This upgrade is also important for applications that rely on current data on the network, such as oracle-based price feeds and automated market makers. With the change, users should see updates to transaction status sooner, and the window in which the market can move before a swap hits the network gets smaller. In practice, this means fewer failed trades and less chance of a transaction executing at a different price than what a user submitted.
