Solana Network Tightens Slot Time to 250 Milliseconds
The Solana network will undergo another change on September 18, 2026, at around 05:01 UTC. The target time for a slot in the protocol will drop from 300 to 250 milliseconds.
This is the third step in a roadmap that began in August and aims to reduce the slot time to eventually reach 200 milliseconds. The improvement proposal responsible for this change, SIMD-0525, outlines a staircase of decreasing slot times to improve network efficiency.
For Solana holders, the main impact will be on delegations, unstaking, and staking rewards. Delegations and unstaking will take effect faster, but staking rewards will arrive more often in smaller portions. Validators running their own nodes or signing offline should take note of this change.
