Solana Slashes Slot Time to 250ms in Bid for 200ms Speed

Solana has reduced its slot time to 250 milliseconds, a crucial step towards achieving an even faster target of 200ms. This change took effect at epoch 1037 on September 18, 2026, and initial data shows slots landing around 266 milliseconds on average with a 0.05% skip rate.

The network's overall compute budget has been adjusted accordingly to accommodate the shorter slot time, with per-slot compute limits being lowered from 62.5 million units at 250ms to 50 million units at 200ms.

Engineers are working on further optimizations, including forwarding methods that send transactions ahead when they might miss their intended leader and testing block and transaction execution against shared conformance standards.
