Solana Speeds Up Network Updates with 17% Faster Slot Time
Solana has implemented a significant change to its network timing, reducing its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This move, made on September 18, aims to increase the frequency of block-production opportunities without raising the overall transaction-processing capacity.
The shorter interval is not intended to boost capacity; instead, it pairs with proportional reductions in per-slot computation and data limits to maintain an approximate wall-clock processing ceiling. Solana's documentation frames this change as part of a slot-time reduction process, retaining the four-slot structure as the target duration falls.
As a result, the leader schedule now has a one-second window, down from 1.2 seconds at the previous 300ms target. Epoch timing also changes due to the shorter slots, with an epoch now estimated to last approximately 30 hours, down from about 36 hours at the prior 300ms setting.
This move is part of a larger effort to improve network efficiency, as outlined in the SIMD-0525 proposal. The goal is to eventually reach a target slot time of 200 milliseconds, but for now, Solana has settled on the 250ms mark.
