Sony Unveils Hybrid Game Controller with Built-in Payment Processing

Sony has taken a significant step towards revolutionizing video game payments with its patent application for a hybrid card and RFID reader game controller.

The proposed technology, which was published in September 2026 under the title 'Video game controller-driven information transfer,' allows players to authorize microtransactions and crypto payments by tapping their credit cards or smartphones against the controller.

This new hardware upgrade would eliminate the need for manual QR code scans, which are currently plagued by performance issues according to Sony's patent filing. The company criticizes the current process of selecting a menu option with a controller only to scan a QR code with a secondary smartphone as detrimental to the user experience and console performance.

The embedded system inside the controller would be able to read and manage various payment data, including credit accounts, bank accounts, physical gift cards, digital wallets, and crypto wallets. This seamless transaction experience is designed to streamline console performance and provide players with an easier management of financial credentials in one place.
